RMS Lippyluver Luc

Border Days 2005

4th of July Parade- Bright Smiles and a Pair of Longears

“I never thought I would rodeo again and here I am in a cowboy hat and having the time of my life.”   Those were the words of a feisty 88 year youngster chosen to be the 2005 Border Days Grand Marshall.   Border Days is Idaho’s oldest rodeo celebration, an annual event held in Grangeville.

It was our honor to be selected to escort this fine lady through three days of parades and rodeo grand entries.   Four year old, RMS Lippyluver Luc, who is a large standard donkey, was exposed to an entire community bursting at the seams with guests from near and far.

Luc was greeted at each rodeo with a roar of clapping and cheering from the packed stands, of course we haven’t told him yet that the jubilation was for his passenger, Doris Swedblom.   Over the loud speakers everyday the rodeo announcer, with a huge grin, would proclaim, “Here he is the cutest little Ass on the Camas Prairie.”   At KORT radio Melinda Fischer talked of Kristi and her gigantic burro.  Mike Johnson, the parade announcer informed the crowd that Luc is a very special donkey with many accomplishments; he complimented Luc on doing such a magnicificant job.

At the final rodeo Luc found himself and the cart surrounded by a couple hundred kids waiting for the event where they compete to pull a ribbon off a loose darting and running calf.   Luc had dozens of little hands touching him everywhere and he stood quietly while the kids asked Jim Kingma about a kazillion questions.  Many came back after the event just to touch the donkey again and of course ask a few more questions.

When Doris made her final exit from the gig and before she left for home, she gave Luc a huge hug around his neck, thanked him for taking such good care of her and gave him special kisses.   Luc, the softie that he is, loved all the attention but he loved those kisses from Ms Doris the best.
