Team Donk

Where Oh Where is Spring in North Central Idaho?

The third weekend of March the fellas had a chance to ride in their new to us donkey transportation. We recently purchased a smaller trailer for short hauls and the boys had yet to load ' n go. When it came time to depart Jim took Luc, who always jumps right in. This time it was definitely a no go scenario. We tried Liberty who also was having nothing to do with this opportunity to be on the road again.

Jim repositioned the trailer so the full length door would stay open on its own leaving me free to help. In time Team Donk loaded much to their vivid discontent. This trailer is slightly narrower and a little shorter height wise than what they are used to. With a few trips under their belts I foresee no future problems. This first trip was definitely going to be eventful.

When we arrived at our destination Luc was riding backwards, which is what he likes so I knew all was well in Luc’s world. Liberty’s side of the trailer had no ears in sight, that's because he was lying down! This behavior seems to be his answer for stressful events. "Ya don't like it, heck jus' lay down... that’ll fix 'em!"

I hadn't told the guys where we were taking them, thinking that would help the process. It was spring vet work time and this was a new to them Veterinarian, who turned out to be awesome! He drew blood and gave shots before Luc knew anything was happening, this normally does not go this smoothly. With Liberty still down in the trailer our new vet hero drew blood and gave shots without even a quiver from our drama queen. Immediately followed by the stubborn as a donkey jokes! Mr. White Face redeemed donkeys everywhere as he hopped right in his newly Luc approved transportation for the ride home.

When we arrived Luc jumped out and was ready for breakfast. Liberty's attempt to get up didn’t go so well. He ended up wedging himself tightly into a corner of the trailer. Jammed in and unable to move he was in a real pickle. Nothing left to do but get the tractor and enough 5" webbed nylon cable to wrap long ways around his body and gently slide him out. I felt like we should be video taping this for the television program Animal Rescue.... the episode of the 16 hand donk trapped in 3 horse stock trailer.

Once out of the trailer the shook up Liberty was content to lie in the middle of the driveway, where he could see no reason whatsoever to even attempt standing. Two and a half hours later there was still no sign of our drama queen moving. That's when Jim got serious and took away Liberty's comfort zone. He caught Luc and led him down the driveway and out of sight. Oh boy did Liberty jump right up once Luc disappeared. Again Ta-Da…. Lucers to the rescue.

That was our big adventure for March 2008. Not exactly what I had planned. The weather stayed consistently bad with days of snow, melting into mud repeating this scene over and over. Lows fell to the lower teens with cool daytime temperatures and enough wind to keep us sheltered most days. The month ended in a winter storm watch. In and out like a lion, definitely no lamb in site.

With staying indoors it give me an opportunity to format a Team Donk poster, brochure, flyer and rate card for local events and excursions. With the purchase of insurance the boys are now ready for local events. Over the past few years we have been unable to attend a variety of functions including drives to the prom, weddings, birthday parties, family reunions and other special occasions.

Don't forget to check back with us the first of May for a Team Donk update.

From your Still Stuck in Winter Friend Kristi, who is looking for sunshine and warm temps... with mane cutting clippers in hand!
From Luc and Liberty who would like to have some spears of green to seek out in their freshly cleaned pastures.
